The Columbia brand has been part of Australia's stationery history for the past 80 years, with its beginnings being traced back to 1919. With the original plant and offices located on City Rd, Sydney, the Columbia brand focused solely on the importing and distribution of carbon papers and inked ribbons throughout Australia. In 1931, the founder of Columbia Australia, G.H Horton, secured the machinery, raw materials and technical 'know-how' to produce carbon paper and ribbons in Australia. This was undertaken under the license agreement created with Columbia Ribbon & Manufacturing Company, New York, and was the start of Australian made products being distributed all around the country. This expansion increased in the 1940's with the newly designed factory at Lane Cove, Sydney, and marked the beginning of the mass production of pencils in Australia. This unique manufacturing method resulted in Columbia Pencil & Crayon Company being the only pencil lead manufacturing plant in the Southern Hemisphere. The expansion into the pencils category created the beginning of the well loved pencils Australians have come to work with till today. Copperplate, Cadet, Formative and Colour Sketch were all part of the initial production from the Lane Cove based pencil plant. These pencils represented quality and style back then, and continue to do so today in the same fashion. During this time one thing remained constant, the quality and reliability of the Columbia range of lead and coloured pencils. Changes in production processes and different ranges phased in and out, but the reliability and quality of Columbia pencils have always remained constant.

In 2011, the Parker factory at Newhaven, East Sussex, England (United Kingdom) was closed, and its production transferred to Saint-Herblain (France). George Safford Parker, the founder, had previously been a sales agent for the John Holland Gold Pen Company. He received his first fountain pen related patent in 1889. Pentel is a privately held Japanese company which produces stationery products. The name is a combination of the English words pen and tell (as in, telling a story). Pentel is also the inventor of non-permanent marker technology. Most Pentel products are manufactured in Japan, Taiwan and France. Yukio Horie, who was the President of the company until his death in 2010, had invented the fibre or felt-tipped pen in the 1960s A Curiosity is that Former Secret Intelligence Service officer Richard Tomlinson alleges that Pentel Rolling Writer rollerball pens were extensively used by agents to produce secret writing (invisible messages) while on missions. An agent would write the secret message on a piece of paper, then place a blank piece of paper over the message, pressing the two pages together for a moment. When they are separated, the second page looks completely blank but in fact, contains a latent (invisible) copy of the message. The agent then destroys the first piece of paper. Simply rubbing the blank-looking second piece of paper with an ink pen reveals the latent message. Who ever said stationery was boring!

The history of St John Ambulance dates back as far as the seventh century AD, during the time of the Crusades in Jerusalem. Due to the growing number of Christians making the pilgrimage to the holy city in 1070 AD, a hospice was established by monks to offer care for the sick and injured. The hospice developed into a successful hospital which provided care not only for Christians, but all denominations of faiths. The Hospitallers later moved to Cyprus and Rhodes, before settling in Malta in 1530. The historical association of the Order with Malta is remembered to this day with the use of the cross of Amalfi (today known as the Maltese Cross) by the Order of St John. The link back to the original roots of St John was re-established in 1882, with the construction of the Jerusalem Eye Hospital, which provides crucial eye care to more than 100,000 disadvantaged people each year. In 1888, Queen Victoria recognised the great work provided by the organisation, granting St John a Royal Charter. Today, the Sovereign head is Queen Elizabeth II. The history of St John in Australia began in 1883, when the St John Ambulance Association was set up in Melbourne. The first Brigade unit was not established until twenty years later in Sydney, where volunteers offered first aid assistance to the public. The Association and Brigade began expanding activities into other Australian States and Territories, building the charity to present day – Australia’s largest provider of first aid training and related services. St John delivers more than 450,000 first aid certificates and boasts more than 17,000 Event Health Services and Social Services volunteers. St John Ambulance in Queensland dates back to 1889. Public first aid classes began in Brisbane, and later expanded as far north as Cairns. Although first aid techniques have changed significantly over the decades, the commitment to providing quality first aid training, kits and equipment has remained at the same high standard.

Honoured by the specialist printing industry shortly before his death as the “Father of self-adhesives in New Zealand”, Jack Shaw built a small Onehunga jobbing printer into Quik Stik International Ltd, the largest firm in its field in Australasia and recognised internationally for its quality and innovation. By 1968, Quik Stik was airfreighting more than 250kg of labels per week to customers around the Pacific Rim from its home base. An auxiliary production unit in VIC helped supply that country. Its network covered Australasia, South-east Asia, Oceania and the west coast of the USA. By the time the company was sold to US-listed Esselte Business Systems Inc in 1986 its NZ plant occupied an 8,000 square metre, purpose-built premises at Wiri – the third move necessitated by growth in three decades.
